PRESS RELEASE: Shared rehearsal for the World Theatre Day

WOW-EFFECT Hosts a Shared Rehearsal to Celebrate the World Theatre Day Two amateur theatre groups from Nijmegen – WOW-EFFECT Theater and Playback Theater Storyline – are getting together to celebrate the World Theatre Day that takes place on March 27th. After last year’s success with Toneelgroep Twister and The Fool's Men, this shared rehearsal is the second edition. WOW-EFFECT aims to continue building connections within the amateur theatre community of Nijmegen and beyond, in the years to come. The rehearsal kicks off with collective acting and team-building exercises, lead by the directors from each group. This helps people to connect and feel comfortable with each other. Actors also get to experience input from a different director. The groups then share a piece from their current project with the others. This is their [...]

Where are the Women in Jekyll and Hyde?

Where are the Women in Jekyll and Hyde?  When we chose The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as our project, we knew it was strongly male-centred. To give an equal opportunity to our actors, we opened all characters for casting regardless of the actors’ gender, and ended up with a mixture of character-actor gender combinations. Little did we know that so many people gave thought to the role of females in the original story. So let’s dive a little deeper into the ‘female side’ of Jekyll and Hyde. In the 19th century a big chunk of the most well-known literature was written by men, for men. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is no [...]

WOW-EFFECT joins the discussion on Nijmegen’s cultural future

WOW-EFFECT joins the discussion on Nijmegen’s cultural future Nijmegen is a hotspot for cultural initiatives. Many organizations, young artists and amateur groups– including WOW-EFFECT– receive support from the local government. But a question remains: Is there still room for improvement? Join us in the first Cultuursalon on December 6th, as we talk with Lindenberg’s new director Teddy Vrijmoet about last season’s collaboration. A great collaboration with Lindenberg Around this time last year, WOW-EFFECT received some incredible news: among a number of amateur groups, WE had been chosen by Lindenberg Huis voor de Kunsten to be their first in-house theater group for the entire season 2017–2018. The opportunity not only meant we were granted a nice rehearsal space and stage for free; it also meant we received valuable supervision on directing, light design and [...]

All for one and none for two: WOW-EFFECT performs Jekyll and Hyde

All for one and none for two WOW-EFFECT performs Jekyll & Hyde We shall Hyde no more, for the whispers of a seasonal return are true– WOW-EFFECT Theater is back, this time joined by 10 new members and one classic story. Grab a chair and sit down for a strange case of dualism and doors, as WE take on a new project and upcoming play about Dr Jekyll and his split personality-pal. Cows are either white cows with some black, or black cows with some white. With a zebra, you can’t tell if it’s a white horse with black stripes, or a black horse with white stripes. It’s all… blended up, you know? So what are you? A black horse or a white horse? Since the [...]

We talked to some of our members, Céline, Haoyu, Jeroen, Anna and Piyush, about their involvement in the group, our new play and how they found their place within the project. […]

Free eBook: Peter Pan by James M. Barrie

Download "Peter Pan" for free! Peter Pan (also known as the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up or Peter and Wendy) is the story of a mischievous little boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling and her brothers, the fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, the Indian princess Tiger Lily, and the pirate Captain Hook. Peter Pan is J. M. Barrie's most famous work, in the form of a 1904 play and a 1911 novel. The play and novel were inspired by Barrie's friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family. Barrie continued to revise the play for years after its debut until publication of the play script in 1928. In The Lost Boy we follow James as he develops the story throughout the play up until the plays performance [...]
